If you are looking for a trio with prominent oboe parts, this is it! Read on! So much music for this standard trio is Baroque or Classical Viennese. This is a wonderful alternative. Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) composed over 175 songs which have become America’s folk songs because they express in melody and lyrics the mid-19th century life in our country. His music transcends the limits of nationalism, race and time. Four of his most popular songs are included in this arrangement - “I Dream of Jeannie” (which did not meet with immediate success when it was written, but 70 odd years later it became number one on the hit parade!) “Some Folks”, Old Folks At Home”, and “Oh Susanna!” (which became an immediate hit in vaudeville and was picked up by the forty-niners and sung all the way to California during the gold rush. Enough about the history). The oboe has the biggest share of the melody in Jeannie and Old Folks at Home, and must be able to play with a beautiful tone and expressive phrasing. “Some Folks” and “Oh Susanna” are quite different in tempo and style. They are both quite lively and quaint. For OMEA contests participants are asked to select any three of the four movements.
Flute, Oboe and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet) Trio

”Aura Lee” and “Dixie” have both been well known tunes since the mid 19th century and both still have popular appeal today. This woodwind trio arrangement is based on one made for the Mansfield Symphony Brass Trio to perform in children’s concerts. The Brass Trio is available from Great Works as well (00420). Legato playing is necessary for the proper interpretation of “Aura Lee”. and “Dixie” should be played is a light but energetic staccato-marcato style. This is an excellent piece for concert or contest.
Two Clarinets and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet) Trio

This trio was created for the Mansfield Symphony Woodwind Trio to play at children’s concerts. It tells the story of how during the American Revolution and Civil War young boys shouldered a rifle and marched off to war and how sad it was to see them go. This is expressed thru the song “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier”, sometimes called “Buttermilk Hill.” This musical story has a happy ending however when joy is expressed by playing “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” Both songs are based on old Irish tunes. The original arrangement was scored for 2 Bb clarinets and bass clarinet, but it works equally well for bassoon.

Three familiar songs having something to do with the sea make up this mixed woodwind trio. “Sailing, Sailing”, “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”, and “What Do We Do with A Drunken Sailor”. Make the melodies sing. Dynamics, phrasing and articulations are all well marked. Play the finale with determination and excitement. It would be possible to use an oboe instead of the flute on the first part, although the range up to high D might be prohibitive unless the oboe player is sufficiently accomplished. Keys are Bb major and G minor and duration is about 2’20”. This trio offers and excellent opportunity for young players to learn to blend three different instrumental colors together.

Folk music from all over the world is one of the greatest sources of music, and a satisfying alternative source for woodwind quartet, when so much of the literature is taken from the classics. People who immigrated years ago from Ireland brought their music with them and now it is really American music with Irish roots! These two Irish tunes will be familiar to performers and audiences making this quartet a good choice for contest and concert. “The Minstrel Boy” is a lyrical song requiring sensitive playing, and “The Galway Piper” is an exciting country dance needing a well articulated staccato style.. Keys are Eb and Bb major and duration is 2’30”. Articulations and dynamics are well marked to aid in preparation.
The Blue and Gold Rag - Hall

This quartet (and the one below) was written to provide less experienced woodwind players (especially the double reeds) an opportunity to play ensemble literature well within the limits of their technical and tonal development. A variety of instrumental combinations are offered to make the performing ensemble more versatile and more possible. The standard instrumentation would be flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon, but 2nd flute can be a substitute for the oboe, and a 2nd clarinet, or a bass clarinet for the bassoon. Ragtime first came into being around 1900 developing from the cakewalk. Scott Joplin was the most prominent composer and performer of ragtime music at that time. It enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the 1970’s with the release of the movie “The Sting”. This is an original rag written for the Ontario Bands, Mike Schwall, director. Blue and gold are the school colors. Keep in mind that the tempo or a rag should not be too fast, or rushed. All instruments are kept within practical range for this level and the keys are Eb and Ab major with a recapitulation.
The Half Minute Waltz and March - Hall

This quartet (and the one above) was written to provide less experienced woodwind players (especially the double reeds) an opportunity to play ensemble literature well within the limits of their technical and tonal development. The Half Minute Waltz is of course a “take-off” comparison to the famous “Minute Waltz” by Chopin, and since a half minute is rather short for a composition, a march was added. All instruments are kept within practical range for this level and the entire piece is in Eb major.
