Howa Bouta Cha-cha – Percy Hall

The title is a play on words. At a dance invariably a couple will approach the leader of the band in between tunes and say “Howa Bouta Cha-cha?” Latin music is an excellent choice for large percussion ensembles because of the number of color instruments to be used in the accompaniment. This ensemble requires 9 players but it is advisable to have more than one player on at least some of the mallet parts. The ensemble must always strive for balance of parts, keeping the accompanying voices in that role. Some stickings have been marked to facilitate learning. This ensemble is lots of fun to play, with much to be learned as well, and enjoyable for the audience as well.

Russian Sailors’ Dance - Gliere/Hall

This quartet is scored for orchestra bells, xylophone and 2 marimbas. Both marimba parts can be played on the same concert marimba if another instrument is not available. It also includes percussion parts for 2 players who are to cover snare drum, bass drum and suspended cymbals. This exciting piece is frequently played by symphony orchestras, and also in arrangements by school orchestras. The music describes clumsy Russian sailors learning to do an acrobatic dance. The arrangement is also complete with just the mallet instruments (see the listing above under Mallet Quartets.

The Music Box – Percy Hall
Difficulty: M	OMEA Class: Jr. High	Publ. Code: 000183
This ensemble imitates the sounds of a music box. It is scored for 5 mallet parts and 2 percussion parts. Mallet parts include bells, vibes, xylophone and 2 marimbas (both can be played on the same instrument) and the two percussion players are assigned to cover ratchet, triangle wood blocks, temple blocks and tambourine. The music box is wound up at the beginning and plays until it runs down, and then is wound up again and continues in the form of a round or canon and finally runs down at the end. This ensemble challenges many of the percussion section to play mallet parts that are not overly difficult, wetting their appetites for greater challenges. They will enjoy playing it and it is a real audience pleaser.

“OMEA Class” refers to the assigned difficulty rating on the Ohio Music Educators Association Required List. Sound samples are provided for some of the arrangements on this site. Many of Percy Hall’s compositions and arrangements were originally published by Great Works Publishing or LudwigMasters Publications, whose catalogs were then purchased by Keiser Southern Music in 2020. While many of these publications are currently out of print, most are listed in the Alfred Music online catalog.
